Installing a "START " switch

It is a relatively simple process to fit a start switch to a VW beetle and indeed any vehicle. Detailed below are the steps taken to install a start switch in my 1972 Baja Beetle (read about the car here). Additionally the switch I used is also available further down the page

Ok so first things first decide on what type and style of switch you want to use. The switch only needs to power up the starter motor Solenoid, this draws no more then a couple of Amps, so I would recommend you choose a switch with at least 5 Amps capacity just to be sure.

Also I would recommend you have a look over the electrical drawing for your vehicle before you start.

Things you will need to complete this job:

Switch (5Amps +) this should be a momentary switch
Spade or bullet connectors of your choice
A few lengths of wire (5 Amp)

Tools:
Drill and drill bits
Wire cutters
Crimping tool

We will assume this work is to be carried out on a 70’s beetle. So open your bonnet and locate all those lovely colourful wires that come out from around the drivers side (you may need to remove boot linings to see these). There will be one big clump of wires that come through the steel from the steering column, these are the ones we are interested in.

In this clump of wires is the ignition wire (which goes to + Volts and the key is turned) and when the key is fully turned to start the engine a red and black colour wire goes high (to battery + Volts) for as long as the key is held fully turned, this is the wire we need to play with.

Now this red and black colour wire is the only one that needs to be modified so don’t touch any other wires. To ensure you have the right wire, disconnect it, now try and start your car, if it’s the right wire then the lights on your dash will come on as normal but you will not be able to start the car, i.e. the starter motor does not function. If the starter motor does start to work then you’ve got the wrong wire, put it back were it was!

Note, the red and black wire will go to a fuse, after this fuse the colour of the wire goes red, solid red. This wire then goes in to the wiring loom and not seen again until you go to the engine bay, were it emerges and goes to the starter motor solenoid

One terminal of the switch needs to connect to were the red and black wire used to, i.e. the other side of the fuse. From the second switch terminal connect a wire to the battery + supply.

Use your spade connectors etc to make the join to the switch.

Note, when doing this modification double check yourself every step of the way, if you get something wrong you could risk frying your whole loom, which something you don’t want to have happen.

Switches are available from BajaBeetle.co.uk with either Red or Black caps and are priced at £5.90 each
